100 g of unsweetened popcorn has about 375 Calories - but a normal serving only has about 75. Here's why that difference changes everything.
Energy - noticeably less than chips at around 536 Calories
Fiber - an unusually high number for a snack
Protein - impressive for a grain-based snack
Popped without oil - with butter, this climbs several times over
In short: 100 g of air-popped, unsweetened popcorn delivers about 375 Calories, 14 g of fiber, and about 4 g of fat. But a realistic serving weighs only 20 g - about 75 Calories. Caramel popcorn runs around 500 Calories per 100 g, and movie-theater popcorn with butter can go even higher depending on how it's made.
Many breakfast cereals prominently advertise their fiber content, and depending on the product, that's often in the single digits per 100 g. Unsweetened popcorn comes in at about 14 g - with no fortification at all, simply because the whole kernel is eaten, hull included. The difference isn't some special ingredient - it's just that nothing gets left out with popcorn.
Set the serving size you'd realistically eat. The bars show energy density per 100 g, the number on the right shows your actual serving.
All figures are rounded ballpark values and vary by brand, oil amount, and sugar content. They don't replace checking the actual package.
Nutrition labels are measured in grams - but how full you feel responds to volume. For popcorn, those two measures diverge more than for almost any other snack.
100 kcal look this different:
Volume figures are rounded approximations. But the takeaway holds either way: for the same amount of energy, popcorn gives you many times more bowl volume - and that's exactly why it's so filling.
The most important sentence on this page: nobody eats 100 g of popcorn. A well-filled bowl for movie night weighs about 20 to 30 grams once popped. That comes out to roughly 75 to 110 Calories - less than a medium banana.
This is exactly where the most common calorie-counting mistake happens: applying the 375-Calorie figure from the label to your actual bowl overestimates it by three to five times. Weigh your popcorn unpopped just once, and you'll have a realistic sense of how little corn it takes to fill a big bowl.
The corn itself is constant - everything else comes from what you add to it. One tablespoon of oil adds about 90 Calories to the pan, one tablespoon of butter about 75. Per serving, that can quickly double the calorie count.
Sugar works the same way: caramel popcorn is largely made up of its sugar coating, which is why its sugar content runs around 40 g per 100 g. If you want to keep the good nutrition numbers, pop with hot air and season afterward - paprika, chili, nutritional yeast, or herbs add flavor without meaningful calories.
At about 14 g of fiber per 100 g, popcorn is one of the highest-fiber snacks around - well ahead of many breakfast cereals that advertise fiber as a selling point. Per a 25 g serving, that's still about 3.5 g.
Fiber binds water, swells up in your stomach, and slows gastric emptying. That's the physiological reason a bowl of popcorn keeps you fuller for longer than the calorie count alone would suggest. One note for sensitive stomachs: a larger-than-usual amount of fiber can cause bloating if you're not used to it - more on that on our intolerances page.
At about 12 g per 100 g, popcorn delivers a surprising amount of protein for a grain-based snack. In practice, though, that number shrinks once you account for serving size: a 25 g serving provides about 3 g of protein - a nice bonus, but not a meaningful protein source on its own.
