In short: Finished popcorn can be frozen, but it usually loses crispness when thawed because condensation forms. It's only worth it for large leftover batches. The better solution for stocking up is storing raw popcorn kernels instead - they already keep for a very long time and don't need freezing at all.
Freezing finished popcorn
There's nothing technically stopping you: put the fully cooled popcorn into an airtight freezer bag, press the air out, and into the freezer it goes. It keeps for a few months there.
The catch shows up when you thaw it. Popcorn is extremely sensitive to moisture, and condensation forms as it thaws - exactly what makes popcorn go chewy. The result is usually softer and chewier than fresh. Honestly, for everyday use, it's rarely worth it.
When it's still worth it
There's one good use case: a large amount of leftovers that would otherwise get tossed - say, after a party where quarts of popcorn are left over. In that case, frozen popcorn definitely beats throwing it out.
To thaw it, leave the popcorn out uncovered at room temperature so the condensation can dry off. After that, you can freshen it up with the oven method - a few minutes at 300°F brings back a good amount of the crispness.
The better alternative: store raw kernels instead
For stocking up, there's a much more elegant solution: store raw popcorn kernels instead of finished popcorn. Raw kernels handle cold and long storage just fine and keep their poppability for many months.
They don't even need the freezer for that - stored airtight and dry at room temperature, they already keep for over a year. That way, you always have what you need for fresh popcorn on hand, with zero quality loss. Our guide to storing popcorn covers exactly how.
Special case: popcorn with toppings
For coated popcorn - caramel, chocolate, glazes - freezing is even less advisable. The coatings change texture further when frozen and thawed: chocolate turns gray and crumbly, caramel turns sticky.
These varieties are better made fresh in smaller batches. If some is left over anyway, airtight storage at room temperature for a few days is the better choice over the freezer.
Pros
Saves large leftover batches from the trash
Keeps for a few months frozen
Can be partly refreshed with the oven method
Barely any freezer burn if packed airtight
Cons
Texture suffers when thawed (condensation)
Rarely worth it for everyday use
Coated popcorn changes texture significantly
Raw kernels are the clearly better storage solution

Packed airtight, about three months. After that, quality drops noticeably. It stays safe to eat longer, but the texture keeps getting worse.
Does frozen popcorn turn crispy again?
Not on its own - condensation forms as it thaws and makes it chewy. The oven method (a few minutes at 300°F, then cooling) brings back a good amount of the crispness.
Can you freeze raw popcorn kernels?
Yes, raw kernels handle that just fine. But it's not necessary: stored airtight and dry at room temperature, they already keep for over a year. Freezing offers no real benefit.
Is freezing popcorn even worth it?
Only for large leftover batches that would otherwise get tossed. For regular stocking up, storing raw kernels is the clearly better solution.
Can I freeze caramel or chocolate popcorn?
Better not to. The coatings change texture when frozen and thawed - chocolate turns gray and crumbly, caramel turns sticky. These varieties are better made fresh.
How do I properly thaw frozen popcorn?
Leave it out uncovered at room temperature so the condensation can dry off, then briefly reheat it in the oven. That gives you the crispest result.
